Atheism Examined

Militant atheism often presents philosophical conclusions as if they were scientific results. Claim audits separate what the evidence establishes from what does not follow.

What the Evidence Establishes

Scientific methods successfully model wide ranges of physical phenomena without inserting God as a variable in the equations.

The Philosophical Premise

If a successful physical description does not mention God, then God is explanatorily idle and belief is obsolete.

The Strongest Version

Methodological naturalism has been so fruitful that metaphysical naturalism is the only responsible worldview left; theism adds nothing predictive.

Where the Inference Fails

Absence of God from a physical model is a remark about the scope of the model, not a demonstration that reality is exhausted by that model. Explanatory success inside physics does not settle whether the whole physical order is self-sufficient.

What We Can Defend

Science has not established metaphysical naturalism. The claim that God is unnecessary is a philosophical interpretation and must be argued as such.

What Remains Open

How far particular scientific programs can be extended remains an open empirical question; that does not convert them into metaphysics.
